From the Intern Desk

My name is Lily Barnett, and I'm an upcoming Junior at Meredith College. I spent ten weeks as a communications intern with the Wake County League of Women Voters over the summer, doing various tasks. I uploaded posts to Instagram, Tiktok, and Twitter, as well as created slides and other promotional content for League events. On top of that, I looked at and analyzed social media data in order to best promote the League accounts. I created a blog post about the recent Supreme Court ruling on 303 Creative L.L.C. v. Elenis, a case about gay rights and discrimination.

I've learned a lot over my summer internship with the League of Women Voters. Besides just gaining proficiency with social media platforms, I've also learned about the world of politics and governance. One of my tasks was to tweet a summary of North Carolina General Assembly meetings, which gave me a lot of insight into the less glamorous parts of the political process. I enjoyed the experience it gave me and the way it sparked a higher level of interest in local and state government. It's too easy to get wrapped up in the drama of national politics and forget about just how vital politics at the state and local levels are. Joe Biden doesn't determine how much funding North Carolina public schools get, but that doesn't make the information unimportant.

I loved working with the League and look forward to continuing volunteer work with them!
